Greetings Sustainable Scituate Supporter! We have some exciting news about a very important sustainable project happening in Scituate: The Teak Sherman Park Community Garden Project
The Teak Sherman Park Community Garden Project is a collaborative effort between Sustainable Scituate and resident organic farmer Jon Belber, Director of Education at Holly Hill Farm in Cohasset. The Scituate Conservation Commission has generously offered a parcel of Town conservation land known as the Teak Sherman Park for two purposes: - Up to one half of the parcel will be dedicated to community organic gardening for seniors and low-income residents of Scituate. - No less than one half of the parcel will be dedicated to providing fresh organic produce to the Scituate Food Pantry and teaching organic farming to Scituate Food Pantry recipients, Scituate residents, and Scituate Intermediate and High School students. As you can imagine, our greatest challenge is the finances associated with turning the open space into organic farmland. We are proud to say that thanks to the hard work from our Sustainable Scituate members, we have received a small grant to go towards this organic garden project. We are also very excited (and lucky) that Jon Belber has generously offered his time and expertise to launch this effort!
In addition to the grant funding, we still need you help. We are asking for monetary donations of any amount, and because we believe so much in re-using, we are also asking for donations of goods -- Specifically, used (or new) gardening items. A few things we really need are:
- Small shed
- Tillers -- needed at the end of March for ground breaking
- Fencing -- any amount will help
- Watering equipment -- garden hoses, watering cans, etc.
- Gardening tools -- wheel barrels, shovels, spades, hoes, gloves, knee pads, etc.
- Rain barrels -- or other large containers
- Bulletin board for announcements of spring/fall clean-ups, watering schedules, etc.
